Monsters and Creatures of Light – Chimera, Basilisk and Simurgh

Gods have created many awesome beings.

They gave the gift of life to many amazing creatures.

However, most probably their greatest creation were the mythical creatures.

Both terrifying and amazing these creatures were special creations which could do amazing things.

Some were beautiful and some were hideous; some were small and some were enormous; some were weak and some were overwhelmingly strong.

Regardless, every single one of them captured the attention and the imaginations of many generations and probably will for years to come.

In Champions of Gods, we will give our best to bring these creatures to life in their full glory and beauty.

Chimera

Lore of mythical creatures in Greek mythology is insanely rich and filled with some of the most amazing creatures.

When you say the word dangerous and think about the Greek mythical creatures, few of them come in as contenders for the top spot.

One of the most dangerous is definitely the three-headed beast called the Chimera.

Homer described Chimera as: “a thing of immortal make, not human, lion-fronted and snake behind, a goat in the middle, and snorting out the breath of the terrible flame of bright fire.”

The Chimera was a three-headed monster that had struck fear even into the hearts of the greatest warrior’s.

This horrifying creature was finally defeated by Bellerophon with the help of Pegasus.

The Chimera was situated in foreign Lycia, which it terrorized. When Bellerophon arrived in Lycia, the Chimera was truly ferocious, and he could not harm the monster even while riding on Pegasus. He felt the heat of the breath the Chimera expelled and was struck with an idea.

A scholiast to Homer adds that Bellerophon: “finished her off by equipping his spear with a lump of lead that melted when exposed to the Chimera’s fiery breath and consequently killed her”.

The Chimera is one of those mythical creatures that has always been a great challenge and obstacle for any hero.

This ferocious beast is coming back with a vengeance, so all the foolish to oppose her should Beware the Chimera.

Basilisk

In a world in which snakes are depicted as creatures of evil, you would expect many horrifying monsters to have a similar form to theirs.

This statement isn’t very far from the truth.

Throughout history, there was a great number of snake/ lizard/ serpent-like creatures.

However, maybe the most horrifying of them all is the King of Serpents himself.

The one and only,

Basilisk.

Basilisk is a legendary reptile that has the power to cause death with a single glance.

Basilisk is so venomous, it leaves a wide trail of deadly venom in its wake.

The basilisk is called “king” because it is reputed to have on its head a mitre- or crown-shaped crest (as well as for its poisonous breath and deadly glare).

Basilisk is one of those creatures that was mentioned in many legends throughout time. It was said to exist in the ancient times, and in the time of the knights as well.

It is one of those creatures whose awesome abilities make him a terrifying opponent for anyone to face.

Slaying the king of serpents, with a glare of death, is a challenge that only a Champion of Gods should take on.

Simurgh

We have seen and we have talked about some amazing creatures.

Persian mythology has a solid number of their own and unique mythical creatures.

However, their most awesome mythical creature might just be the most awesome creature in the entire mythical world.

A benevolent mythical bird called

Simurgh.

Unlike the other two mythical creatures in this post, Simurgh is the epitome of life and everything that is good.

Simurgh is depicted in the Persian mythology as a winged creature in the shape of a bird, gigantic enough to carry off an elephant or a whale.  The Simurgh is described as a lion-bodied creature with wings and a bird’s beak.

The touch of the Simurgh, or one of its feathers, could heal a man instantly.

Persian legends consider the bird so old that it had seen the destruction of the world three times over. The Simurgh learned so much by living so long that it is thought to possess the knowledge of all the ages.

The Simurgh was considered to purify the land and waters and hence bestow fertility. The creature represented the union between the Earth and the sky, serving as mediator and messenger between the two.

The Simurgh roosted in the Tree of Life, which stands in the middle of the world sea. The plant is potent medicine and is called all-healing, and the seeds of all plants are deposited on it. When the Simurgh took flight, the leaves of the tree of life shook, making all the seeds of every plant fall out. These seeds floated around the world on the winds and the rains taking root to become every type of plant that ever lived and curing all the illnesses of mankind.

Simurgh is also a creature that shows in all the major Persian hero stories, as a savior and last hope for the heroes.

Its status in Persian mythology is legendary and we will give our best to bring that legendary feeling to Champions of Gods.

These creatures give all of these stories a more special feeling and help hero reach a higher status.
