Creating a Successful Kickstarter Campaign

Hi everyone,

In these posts, we will be talking about Kickstarter campaigns.

We will be sharing the story of our preparations for the Champions of Gods Kickstarter campaign, as well as many tips and tricks which we learned from some of the best campaigns.

You will also be able to learn from our mistakes, so you won’t have to make them.

Without any more delay let’s unlock the world of Kickstarter together.

Kickstarter Campaign – The Beginning

Many video games creators have very difficult beginnings.

Starting in small garages with very small teams, it was almost impossible for these indie creators to make their dream into reality.

Looking for private investors has always been a very difficult task, especially for these new teams.

Why is this the case?

Because their games didn’t scream “money”.

What these projects were telling was “love”. These creators were doing all of this because of their love and passion for video games. They were creating games that everyone wanted to play, not the ones that would bring the most money.

Without the projects that appealed to these private investors, finding the necessary funding for the video games, they dreamed of making was nearly impossible.

Then along came Kickstarter

A platform that enabled game creators to go around the private investors, and gain the funding directly from their future players.

This was a beginning of a beautiful age in which the players and the game creators started working together in order to bring to life the games which all of them wanted to play (without anyone’s interference).

Judging by this story, someone would think it is very easy to succeed on Kickstarter and gain the funding for your campaign.

Have an awesome idea, post a video about it, some text about your game, promise some rewards and people will come along.

This is the first mistake of many Kickstarter game project creators.

Creating a Kickstarter campaign is easy, but getting funded successfully isn’t.

There is a lot more to a successful Kickstarter campaign, than just having an awesome idea.

Don’t get me wrong.

Having an awesome idea is very important, probably more important than anything else.

However, it is still just a part of what it takes to succeed on Kickstarter.

Kickstarter campaign is an event!

And it should be treated as such.

You can see many campaign creators that come to the Kickstarter with their amazing ideas.

However, instead of putting a lot of effort into presenting their idea, they just post it on Kickstarter and hope for a miracle to happen. Some of them don’t even bother to put anything more than just blocks of text…

Blocks of text, Really???

What if I told you that many of them don’t even break them into paragraphs?

What if I told you that some of them have barely put a full stop in 100 words?

Would you believe that 10% of Kickstarter video games project creators did this?

In that case, I recommend checking out some of the worst Kickstarter projects, and you will get shocked.

If you’ve come up with an awesome idea for the game, and then spent the time to develop that idea into something more, only to come in front of people with just text is like you are trying to destroy your own work on purpose.

If you have already put a lot of effort to develop your game idea, then go the extra mile and put some hard work in your Kickstarter campaign as well. It will be worth it, guaranteed.

Put yourself in that uncomfortable place of attention and show everyone how good both you and your idea really are!

Get creative and have guts!

If you have a working demo of the game, then make a gameplay video.

If you don’t have a working demo, stand in front of the camera and speak from the heart.

Show off some of your artworks and don’t be afraid to say your piece.

You have already done so much, don’t let the fear of failure stop you in making your dream a reality!

Important things that will increase your chances of success

There are many things that can determine the end result of your Kickstarter campaign.

Before we start with the topic of what makes a Kickstarter campaign, we will go through some general principles which, if respected, will increase your chances of having a successful Kickstarter campaign.

#1 Be student of the game

Number 1 important thing to do, is not just specifically for the Kickstarter campaign, but should be a life motto is: “Be the student of the game”.

What this means, of course, is that you must learn about something in order to master it.

Learning about Kickstarter campaigns is one of the most crucial things to do while preparing for your campaign.

You could read some books that were written for the crowdfunding projects, such as Kickstarters’ guide to Kickstarter and the crowdfunding handbook.

You can also read many online articles, which can help you in your pursuit of mastering Kickstarter.

Learning from other people’s experience will not just give you an insight into how Kickstarter works, but you will also be able to see how some of the most successful Kickstarters achieved their success and to learn from other people’s mistakes.

What you should also do is the analysis of 10 best and 10 worst Kickstarter video game campaign.

The best thing to do is find similar campaigns’ to yours, in terms of genre, funding goal, star power (are they famous and popular creators) and so on.

You could also see how the best of the best did it, but you must understand that most of them were already popular and had many successful titles on their resume.

Below I’ve put a list of questions for analyzing any Kickstarter campaign.

#2 Get creative

Kickstarter is all about creativity!

It is probably the most important thing for success on Kickstarter.

Here we are sharing certain things that will help you create the best campaign possible.

However, in the end, it will all depend on how creatively you are going to use this information and combine them with your project.

Your creativity will be the deciding factor in this adventure, so use it to its fullest.

Know your strengths and weaknesses

This is meant for both you and your project.

You should analyze both yourself and your project and realize what are your strengths and what are your weaknesses.

This way you can play on your strengths and put them in focus, while at the same time be aware of your weaknesses and try to improve on them.

#3 Know your objective

Most of the time your objective is to reach your funding goal.

However, when you think about it, you can gain a lot more than just the necessary funding for your game.

You can create a relationship with your backers, which will be your first players and which will quite possibly be your supporters for years to come.

#4 Have a general message

This is an overall thing.

This message is something that sets the tone for everything you do during your campaign.

It determines the way you are going to approach your Kickstarter campaign.

If your goal is to come off as very serious, you won’t be jumping around like a crazy person, or make stupid jokes.

You probably shouldn’t do stupid jokes, even if you want to come across as funny :’)

#5 Get personal

This is very important for any Kickstarter campaign.

It is true that on the Kickstarter people are trying to get fundings for their projects.

However, even though the quality of an idea has a huge influence on whether or not the project will get funded, people buy from people and on Kickstarter people support people.

One of the main reasons behind this is TRUST.

You can promise whatever you want, and you may have proofs that you can do it.

If people don’t trust you, they won’t give you their support.

That is the reason why getting personal is so important.

Once that you show people who you really are, how passionate and how dedicated you are to making your dream a reality, people will relate to you and they will follow and support you.

With this said, don’t be afraid to show people who you are, because you will be rewarded greatly.

#6 Honesty

This is something that should be everyone’s principle, not just for the Kickstarter campaign, but for life in general, is HONESTY.

Remember that the Kickstarter is only the beginning of your journey and your connection with your backers will last a lot longer than the campaign (depending on your ability to keep your fans close).

They want to see your project succeed as much as you do, and they will be the driving force behind your success.

What this means is that their trust is something that you should treasure and keep safe!

Main Parts of every Kickstarter campaigns

Every Kickstarter campaign has 4 main parts:

  • Video pitch
  • Text pitch
  • Rewards
  • Update

Video pitch should explain what your project is all about and it would be good to show your personal side as well.
Your Video pitch is probably your greatest asset in grabbing the attention and interest of your potential backers.

In Text pitch, your idea should be explained in a lot greater detail.
Here you can showcase a greater description of the game, some of the great materials that you have prepared, talk more about your plans after Kickstarter and so on.

The concept of Rewards on Kickstarter is very clear.
What are your backers going to get, if they decide to support your project?

Here you must be very creative, especially when you are trying to get fundings for your video game. A lot of times offering only a copy of the game will not be enough to get your campaign funded.

You can offer things like early accesses and in-game bonuses, as well as some unique rewards which you are creating for your Kickstarter backers only.
You can get personal here as well, again the only real limit is your creativity.

Through Updates, you should first and foremost inform your audience about what is going on with you and your project.

Why is it this important to keep your backers informed?

By leaving your backers uninformed, you are risking to lose:

  • Their attention and interest
  • The opportunity of them spreading the word about your project
  • Them as your backers.

We will cover all of these parts in a lot greater detail in the upcoming posts, but for now, let’s get the overall picture of what makes a successful Kickstarter campaign.

Additional parts of successful Kickstarter campaigns

However, there are some other aspects of successful Kickstarter campaigns that have to be done outside of the project’s Kickstarter campaign page. Most important of these are:

  • Material preparation
  • Promotion before and during Kickstarter campaign
  • Reward fulfil

Materials preparation

Refine your materials.

Deliver the best possible materials that you can.

It doesn’t have to be too much, but its quality will be one of the measures of your quality, and you want them to be perfect.

Promotion during and before the Kickstarter campaign-

The best Kickstarter campaigns have two big promotional periods: before and during the Kickstarter campaign.

It isn’t enough to just post your Kickstarter campaign project on the Kickstarter and wait for the magic to happen.

Because it won’t.

It didn’t for anyone, and it won’t for you.

All of the successful creators knew that in order to gain the necessary support for their projects, they would first have to raise people’s awareness about it.

That is something that shouldn’t be done only during the Kickstarter campaign, but a few months before as well.

Reward fulfilment

Reward fulfillment can be divided into 2 parts – Production and Shipping.

As we already mentioned, many campaign creators (especially in the video gaming part of Kickstarter) don’t think it through while coming up with their rewards.

As the copies of the game are usually reserved as the rewards for the lower tier (since their cost can be from 10$ to 50$), Creators have to come up with the additional rewards for the higher reward tier.

From specially made trinkets to personalized things, there is a variety of rewards that they can offer to their backers.

What they forget to do most of the times is not just to count in, but to check what costs will they have, while producing these rewards.

Shipment is also a part of the Kickstarter campaign, that a lot of creators forget about while making their rewards.

Don’t include free shipping around the world if you haven’t checked the shipment pricing.

Now that you understand some of the basic concepts behind every successful Kickstarter campaign, you are ready to explore the realm of Kickstarter.
