Champions of Gods – Epic Civilizations of the Ancient World

Who we are today is the result of our past. Our past decisions have determined our life’s path.

If we go by that logic, then the modern world’s path has been set by the ancient civilizations.

As legendary as one can get, these ancient civilizations are the foundation on which the world as we know it was built.

In this post, we will be talking more about the ancient civilizations which will be present in Champions of Gods.

As we have already said, starting civilizations in Champions of Gods will be Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, and Ancient Persia.

Let’s learn more about these civilizations’ pure awesomeness.

Ancient Greece is probably the most world known ancient civilization. History and mythology of the ancient Greeks are so inspirational and famous, that their stories were used as the basis for many games, movies, cartoons, books and so on.

When we talk about the mythology of ancient Greeks, we usually remember Hercules’ labors, Theseus and the Minotaur, Perseus and Medusa, Titanomachy and so on. So many colorful stories and myths are one of the main reasons that Greek mythology still lives on.

The pantheon of Gods in ancient Greece consisted of Gods such as Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hera, Ares, Athena and many more. They have taken the throne after the victory over Titans in Titanomachy, and from then on have ruled mankind. These mighty Olympians were to be worshiped and feared.

However, coming shoulder to shoulder with the Olympians, in terms of popularity, are the Legendary Heroes of the ancient Greece.

Hercules is probably the most famous of all the ancient heroes. Through his labors, he has proven himself of being worthy of his demi-god status. When you add to the mix awesome Heroes such as Perseus and Theseus, you know that something special is about to happen.

Add in the rich lore of mythological creatures such as Hydra, Minotaur, Cerberus, Chimera, and you have an insane number of Characters from which you could make as many games as you would want to.

If the mythology of ancient Greece wasn’t enough to prove their number 1 status, then perhaps we should tell a bit more about their awesome History. They were a great warrior and philosophical society and their culture is present in stories till this very day and will probably be for millennia to come.

Many great stories describe this civilizations’ rich culture, especially war stories like Trojan War and Greco-Persian  War.

There were some great kings that have conquered a lot of land such as king Agamemnon. However, the most famous king in all of Greece, and the greatest combination of both king and warrior is definitely King Leonidas of Sparta.

The epic battle of Thermopylae is one of the most retold stories of all time, and bravery of King Leonidas and his 300 Spartan brothers will never be forgotten.

If these Kings weren’t great enough, then we should perhaps start with awesome warriors.  And with who else can we begin this part of the story, except with the greatest warrior that has ever lived, mighty Achilles.

A Trojan War Hero, who gave his life for eternal glory was an unbeatable warrior (well, except if you were to shoot him in his heel). His great battle with Hector (mighty warrior and Trojan Prince) is one of the encounters for the ages and yet another tale to be retold for years to come. Add to the mix great Odysseus (whose brains, wits and tactics were unparalleled) and you can see why even great Trojan Wall wasn’t good enough to stop the Greeks.

We have already mentioned Leonidas and his Spartan brothers in terms of battle at Thermopylae, but how can we not mention them as a single most dominant warrior race of all time, the Spartans.
Born and bred for war, these men were ultimate fighting machines. Cast away on their day of birth if any weakness or deformity was found on them, Sparta was a brutal place in which only the strongest could survive. Their way of life was the way of war, and those who tried to get in their way would very soon perish by the hands of mighty Spartans.

Ancient Greece has given so much to the world and its awesomeness is what separates it from the rest.

Let us say, right from the beginning, that we are fully aware, that Roman Empire’s time comes after Greeks’ and Persians’ time of domination.

However, we wanted to create a new world in which anything can happen, and in which multiple civilizations and their mythologies can coexist at the same time.

In order to do this, we had to bend time, space and reality, so we can bring You one of the most intriguing fantasy worlds that have ever been created.

What if Greeks and Romans fought each other in peaks of their strength? What if mythology became reality? How would all the Gods coexist and stand the fact that, despite all of their divine powers, they don’t rule the entire world? All of this and more is what Champions of Gods will bring to You.

Now let’s go back to the Original subject – The Roman Empire.

It is true that the Romans have taken most of the mythological beliefs of the ancient Greeks and adapted them to their own image. However, what is also true is that Roman’s mythology had some awesome and unique characters of their own.

What I mean is there were unique Gods, such as Janus (God of beginnings and endings, transitions, doors, basically anything that had two different but complementary functions) who was so mighty that he could even overpower  Jupiter (Romans’ equivalent of Zeus). An absolute powerhouse, whose name had to be spoken first, no matter which deity was to be worshiped at any moment.

Some of the Gods were a lot more worshiped in the ancient Rome than they were in ancient Greece. Most notable examples of these are the God of War Mars and the Goddess of victory Nike.

There were also unique mythical creatures, such as Basilisk. King of Serpents, killing his victims with as much as a single glare. Of course if we add to it the legendary stories of creation of Rome, from Aeneas (one of the survivors of the Trojan War, given his glory in Virgil’s Aeneid trough which he becomes the first true Hero of Rome), to Romulus and Remus, there is a really big reason to consider this civilization, one of the greatest that have ever existed.

However, what really earns this civilization’s place as one of the greatest ever, is Rome’s awesome history.

It was marked first and foremost by the great Leaders and Emperors such as Julius Caesar, Augustus, Trajan and many others. These people have increased the influence and strength of the Roman Empire many times, and have proven themselves as more than capable Leaders.

This time was also marked by the Great Heroes and revolutionaries, especially gladiators, such as Spartacus, Flamma, Crixus, and others. They have proven their abilities through many vicious battles in the Gladiator Arenas, versus many opponents. Even though they were initially meant to entertain Roman people, through battles for their lives, some of them went beyond that. The most famous is, of course, the example of Spartacus which led a major slave uprising in a battle for freedom.

And if all of this wasn’t enough we should mention the warriors on whose sacrifice and strength this great civilization was built. Of course, the first ones that come to mind are the famous Roman Legionnaires. With their famous “tortoise” (testudo) battle formations (which I am sure Spartan’s would like to put to the test) they have run through all who tried to challenge their dominance.

Now that is how you earn the spot among the Greatest Civilizations of all time.

Ancient Persia is one of the most dominant civilizations that has ever existed.

I mean at one point in time they actually had almost 45% of total world population under their rule (impressive?).

However, despite a very big rise in popularity of this civilizations’ history (especially after the “300” movie), there aren’t many games that have actually depicted this great civilization.

We wanted to change that. We wanted to bring something new that hasn’t been deeply explored before.

We are very proud to say that Champions of Gods will be the First MMORTS game that has ever featured Persia as a playable civilization.

Not only that, but Champion of Gods will also be the first game that has ever deeply explored the Persian religion called Zoroastrianism with their Gods, Mythical Creatures, and Heroes.

Now some may think that Persian mythology wasn’t that big as the ones of the other civilizations, but they couldn’t be further from the truth. The mythology of Persian people has some similarities with other famous mythologies across the world. However, most of the mythological material is uniquely theirs and it is awesome! For example, the concept of Gods is similar to other mythologies.

However, unlike in many other mythologies, in Persian mythology, there was a clear division between Good and Evil. Their supreme God Ahura Mazda, the symbol of everything that was good, was opposed by the supreme god of all evil things and creations, Ahriman in a battle for the ultimate victory.

In Champions of Gods, you will be able to choose which side you are going to worship, Good or Evil, Ahura Mazda’s or Ahriman’s’, and you will be given gifts which will help you to achieve your goals.

There are also amazing tales of great Heroes which have accomplished incredible feats of strength, courage and valor. Probably the most famous of all these Heroes is Rostam whose heroic feats would test even Hercules’ and his labors. From defeating an impossible opponent in  Esfandiyār (another amazing Persian Hero) to defeating Azhi Dahaka (Horrifying dragon, son of supreme Evil god Ahriman) his feats are just plain amazing.

There are also fascinating mythical creatures which have never been seen anywhere else. Their most fascinating mythical creature Simurgh is also one of the most fascinating mythical creatures of all mythologies. A winged creature in the shape of a bird, gigantic enough to carry off an elephant or a whale, healer, and savior of Heroes. There are also some mythical creatures that are used today in other civilizations’ mythologies, but they are in truth Persian. For example, did you know that mythical creature Manticore (which is these days mostly shown as an original Greek mythical creature) is originally a Persian mythological creature?

This civilization has a very rich history and we want to bring that unique culture to all of You to enjoy and explore. From the conquest of the Middle East and creation of the Achaemenid Empire to the epic clash with Greeks, this civilization had many great moments.

What they also had are great Kings, such as Cyrus the Great (who was probably the greatest of all kings, with huge conquests under his belt and the creation of the largest empire that the world had seen at that time, the original creator of Achaemenid Empire), Darius I (who ruled the Persian Empire at its peak and spread the glory of Persian Empire even further than his predecessor), and (even though he was soundly defeated by the Greeks, after that war he became the most famous of them all) Xerxes I.

I won’t be talking more about battles with Greeks because for that, I would need a post for each of the battles.
However, perhaps even after everything I’ve already said, there is one more name left, that rivals even Xerxes himself in fame.

I am talking about the elite Persian Warriors called the Immortals. Immortals were personal kings’ guard made of elite warriors. They have gained their name because of the battle tactics which they used, (when one of the immortals fell in battle, another one would take his place) which made them look truly immortal. The deadliest warriors in all of Asia.

Ancient Persia is bringing a chunk of mystery and tons of awesomeness to Champions of Gods.

Some of you were wondering why we decided to go with these 3 starting civilizations. The reason why we choose these 3 precisely is the fact that we want to bring something new and something not seen before.

We want to bring both classic and fantasy warfare and make them into reality.

The awesome war between Persians and Greeks can be relived, and at the same time, you can have fantasy war, like Romans versus Persians.

You can Have Achilles battle, Spartacus, in a battle to the death, or you can even have them join forces and try to slay the mighty creatures like Hydra, Minotaur, and Basilisk.

The possibilities are nearly limitless and fun is guaranteed!
